Insight's magic touch
Company transforms Corel Centre into Juno music heaven
By ANN
MARIE McQUEEN, Ottawa Sun
The
250-person Insight Productions team drove up from Toronto and
arrived at the Corel Centre just after the Ottawa Senators beat the
Boston Bruins Tuesday night.
Someone said the stadium staff
may have beaten their own speed record in covering up the ice
afterwards, making room for the group charged with producing the
live, two-hour Juno Awards telecast Sunday night to take over.
They've been working -- some around the clock
-- ever since, said executive producer John Brunton.
Brunton, a veteran of nine Juno Awards telecasts, winner of
10 Genies, took me on a special behind-the-scenes-tour Wednesday.
At that point there were two Zambonis parked in Shania
Twain's dressing room and carpenters were just beginning to build
the jagged wooden points that would form a scalloped stage edge.
LAVA LAMPS
I spied three illuminated lava lamps, one
beside line producer Lindsay Cox's workstation. They were for the
show, she told me, keeping their exact role in the telecast a
maddening secret.
The crew wouldn't tell me much about the
set design; only that they will be able to transform the stage with
light.
Hmmmm, might that be lava light?
"It's fun to
see, all of a sudden, five, four, three, two, one, that thing that
was on a piece of paper, it's here, live and it's all in the hands
of God at that point," said Brunton, walking around a centre filled
with busy workers.
When Insight rolled into town they
brought with them two audio trucks, where technicians will take
turns mixing sound from acts during the telecast, and a large
broadcast truck from which it will be directed.
There were
10 tractor-trailers filled with thousands of equipment pieces,
including 650 km of cable, 300 lights affixed to hundreds of metres
of truss, 100 speakers, 14 television cameras and a giant oval
projection screen, which will hang behind the stage.
By
Wednesday they'd already set up a working production room with
dozens of charging walkie-talkies and cellphones and individual
computer stations complete with Internet and phone lines. The craft
services room was open and serving sandwiches for lunch.
LAST-MINUTE WRINKLES
Everyone hopes there won't be
any last- minute wrinkles to the show, but if there are, they know
they can cope.
Last year in St. John's, Nfld., some
pyrotechnics knocked out a projector key to a set design during
dress rehearsal, but the show still went on.
A director laid
out three chairs and caught a few hours' nap while waiting for
emergency carpenters being flown in from Toronto to arrive. He hopes
to not be doing that this year.
JUNO LINES
I stop to
ask Trevor Hammond, who, with Dave Thoms, wrote the show's entire
script, to feed me just a few lines.
"I can guarantee
someone will say 'and the Juno goes to,' " he jokes. "I wrote that."
Brunton is a tall man with a slight handlebar moustache I
compare to the Remington shaver guy, because after seeing an Insight
short film on thoroughbreds when he was still a teenager, and loving
it, he eventually scored a job, worked his way up and in 1979,
bought the company.
Today, Insight is also behind Open Mike
With Mike Bullard and dozens of music, comedy and skating specials
including "Stars on Ice," on either side of the border.
SHANIA HIS CHOICE
The level of Canadian talent --
Shania Twain was his top pick as host -- and a fan-friendly
atmosphere make the Junos fun to produce, says Brunton.
All
600 seats on the floor of the Corel Centre will be filled by
rambunctious fans, unlike the U.S. where "industry people in
tuxedos" sit, said Brunton.
And performers, each who are
assigned their own talent "wrangler", usually realize they are part
of a bigger production," said associate producer Andrea Webb.
"The artists don't have a whole lot of expectations because
it's an awards show," she said.
TOP-NOTCH
Brunton
works with a core "posse" of producers, directors and technical
people on shows like this and compares them to an experienced
"platoon heading into a military manoeuvre."
The freelancers
he's hired, many of them local, are also top-notch.
"We have
the cream of the crop; really, it's so huge and such a big
undertaking we have to have the best," said Louise Wood, the show's
producer.
"There is a lot of stress, there are moments of
anxiety and anticipation and hoping it all goes well. Once the show
starts you realize why we're here.
"It's the music."
