When it comes to bus drivers, Wells recognizes it as a national problem. His brother was superintendent of transportation in Florida where he saw the same bus driver shortage problem that Tangipahoa Parish had last year.
“We need to raise the salary,†Wells said. “With the cost of fuel and the rare times when bus drivers have to run, they avoid the possibility of outside employment unless they own their own business.â€
He argues that there are few side jobs for bus drivers that fit their schedule – occupied during the first and last hours of a typical workday – so their pay for their job as bus driver bus must be higher.
As for the desegregation case, Wells thinks the parish is moving in the right direction.
“Tangipahoa Parish can be a shining example and model for other systems in terms of staffing and student distribution while maintaining proud community schools,†he said.
Wells said he wants to bring “a common sense approach to solutions†and sees Tangipahoa Parish as a diverse community where people are able to find common ground.
Wells graduated from Ponchatoula High School in 1984 and graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a certificate in law enforcement, a bachelor’s degree in communications and a master’s degree in education.
Wells has been an active member of the community since a young age. He was a BSA Troop 100 Eagle Scout sponsored by the Ponchatoula Rotary Club. He has also been a member for 18 years of the League of Agricultural and Equine Centers and received the prestigious Silver Horseshoe Award 2021.
With a focus on helping 4-H and FFA students, Wells is now an active board member of the Tangipahoa Parish Fair. The fair has always been part of 4-H and the FAA, and Wells is ready to put more emphasis on those clubs through his affiliation with the fair.
He is a current and former board member of the SLU Alumni Association; current member and past president of the SLU Lions Athletic Association; former board member of Habitat for Humanity, now known as Fuller Center for Housing; current member of the Amite Kiwanis Club and former member of the Hammond Kiwanis Club; and former assistant games director for the Louisiana Special Olympics Summer Games.
He is a graduate of the Louisiana Tourism Leadership Academy and is currently a board member, past president, and graduate of Leadership Tangipahoa.
