The Desert Financial Arena is in “urgent” need of upgrades and will be a priority for Arizona State University after it completes construction of a multi-purpose facility that will house its own hockey team as well as the Arizona Coyotes of the NHL, temporarily vice president for college athletics. Ray Anderson said Wednesday.
Desert Financial Arena is the current home of the Sun Devils basketball, wrestling and gymnastics teams.
“We know we have to fix this problem,” Anderson said. Bickley and Marotta of Arizona Sports. “We said that many years ago. You may remember that the original plan was to try to play hockey and basketball together. It became very clear to us that trying to do this combined project on location was not going to work. We’ve pivoted to focus on the multi-purpose arena first, which you know is nearing completion.
“We have never lost sight of, yes, that Desert Financial … is in dire need, quite frankly, of improvements. It’s clearly on our radar. I anticipate that we will pivot to this very quickly, because we need it.
The school originally planned a joint project in 2018 to renovate what was then called Wells Fargo Arena. A hockey hall was to be added.
In 2020, ASU elected to create a separate arena for the hockey team.
The school recently announced that the 5,000-seat facility will house the Coyotes for at least the next three years as the NHL club finds and builds a permanent home. The Coyotes will end the 2021-22 season playing at Gila River Arena as their lease contract expires.
Arizona State has been considering major upgrades to its indoor basketball arena since at least 2016, but the hockey team’s changing arena needs and the pandemic have caused delays in the process. of planning.
