“They’re not going to compete…”
Gary Neville has made an ominous prediction about Mikel Arteta that Arsenal fans won’t want to hear.
A few weeks into the season, a large proportion of Arsenal fans would not have been too concerned that Arteta might leave the club.
They were much closer to the relegation zone than Champions League places, and Arteta’s time at the club seemed to be coming to an end.
However, he has since turned things around and made Arsenal play great football, while delivering results.
They must now be seen as the favorites to finish in the top four ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, and have a young and exciting squad for Arsenal fans to follow.
Neville’s latest comments could worry Arsenal fans who want Arteta to stay for the future.
Gary Neville on Mikel Arteta
In the most recent episode of The Overlap, he said that if Arsenal finish fourth, which seems likely, Arteta will feel like there is no way to improve from there.
He said: “My worry is that Arteta will finish fourth this season, but it’s still a long way to go… If he finishes fourth, in some ways that’s as good as he can get. It’s sad!
“You have Pep, Klopp, United and Chelsea (to compete). Where can they go? They’re not going to compete…
“I say it like that. Arteta is a brilliant coach and I love his ideas. The maximum is achieved with these players. But if he comes fourth, if he is really tough, he would probably say ‘That’s the best I can do there, I do now to do my next job'”.
Jamie Carragher then agreed that Arsenal would need significant improvements if they were to continue after finishing fourth, insisting they needed to sign a better striker to start from there.
