Gold Arena reopens at Pearkes after closing for upgrades

Ice patch replaced by many other improvements to Saanich facilities

The Gold Arena at GR Pearkes Recreation Center reopened on September 27 with many new upgrades for the enjoyment of the community.

The 53-year-old Gold Arena’s ice slab has been replaced, a new ice melting pit has been added, and the dashboards and glass, the arena net, the siding floor around the planks and the elevator of the building have been improved.

Elevator upgrades are still underway and are expected to be completed later this fall.

Pearkes manager Graham Thomson said he was delighted to welcome the home crowd back this season.

“The slab replacement and other improvements to the rink and buildings ensure many more years of ice programs and services for the community,” Thomson said in a statement, adding that he was grateful to the community. for his patience while the work was in progress.

The Gold Arena is home to many associations and prior to the renovation approximately 4,500 hours of ice were used by these groups per year.
