Manchester United overcame an early deficit to beat the A-League’s Melbourne Victory 4-1 as new manager Erik ten Hag’s winning pre-season start continued in front of a crowd of 74,157 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday .
Three days after United beat Liverpool 4-0 to open their overseas tour in Bangkok, Victory took advantage of an apparent time difference at the visitors to take a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Chris Ikonomidis marked.
But United were leading at half-time after a deflected shot from Scott McTominay and a close-range goal from Anthony Martial.
The Dutch manager, hired by the English Premier League side in April, changed all 10 outfield players at half-time, just as he did against Liverpool. Marcus Rashford’s finish off an Eric Bailly ball was the highlight of the second half which ended in an own goal from a Tahith Chong cross.
United next play against Crystal Palace, also in Melbourne, on Tuesday before taking on Aston Villa next Friday in Perth, Western Australia.
