The best college running programs are coming to Rock Hill soon.
The NCAA has announced that Winthrop University, in partnership with marketing group Visit York County, will host the 2024 NCAA Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships. The event traditionally takes place about a week before the championships. nationals, which take place every November – and it brings together the best male and female university programs in the southeast of the country.
“We are proud to be recognized as a premier organization that hosts and competes against some of the biggest names in college athletics,” Winthrop athletic director Chuck Rey said in a statement.
This will be Winthrop’s second time hosting the regional championship. The first time was in 2018, when the event brought together around 600 athletes from more than 40 schools in York County, according to a statement from the event.
The 2018 cross-country regionals had an economic impact of $270,000, Visit York County manager Andy Clinton told the Herald on Tuesday morning. The prestigious event is another notch in the belt of Rock Hill’s thriving sports tourism industry – an industry that has grown since the construction and opening of the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center in 2020.
The race will be held on the Winthrop Farm cross-country course, a 10km course that circles Lake Winthrop near the Rock Hill Coliseum.
